About
Our Organization
Founded in 1996 by Co-Founders Anthony Rodriguez and Ann-Carol Pence, Aurora Theatre began in a converted hardware store in the Atlanta suburbs with a simple but ambitious vision: bring professional theatre and the arts to the community. That vision soon became an important part of the revitalization of historic downtown Lawrenceville. Recognizing the transformative economic and cultural impact Aurora could have on the community, the City of Lawrenceville invited the theatre to become the cornerstone of its downtown revitalization plans. Through an innovative public-private partnership between the City, private development, and Aurora Theatre, a 100-year-old church was transformed into a $7.5 million theatre complex. The Lawrenceville Arts Center opened its doors in May 2007, establishing Aurora as its resident theatre company and manager and creating a lasting home for professional arts and entertainment in the heart of downtown Lawrenceville.
Now in its 31st Season, Aurora Theatre has grown into one of the Southeast’s leading professional theatres, producing Broadway musicals, contemporary plays, original works, comedy, concerts, children’s programming, Teatro Aurora, and year-round arts education through the Aurora Theatre Academy. Aurora is particularly known for its acclaimed large-scale musicals featuring professional performers, designers, musicians, and live orchestral accompaniment. As the resident company of the Lawrenceville Arts Center, Aurora also helps bring the five-venue facility to life through performances, community events, and educational programming. Located on the historic downtown square, the Lawrenceville Arts Center offers free attached covered parking and easy access to Lawrenceville’s restaurants, shops, and vibrant community. Over nearly three decades, Aurora Theatre has earned numerous accolades, including the Governor’s Award for the Arts & Humanities, multiple Suzi Bass Awards, Georgia Trend’s Best Places to Work, Atlanta Magazine’s Best of Atlanta, and the Gwinnett Chamber IMPACT Regional Business Award. Today, Aurora continues its mission of connecting people through exceptional live performance while contributing to the cultural vitality and economic strength of Gwinnett County and the greater Atlanta region.
